Maricopa County Recorder: Supervisors Choose Delay Over Compliance with Court Order

April 22, 2026

(Phoenix) –  Today’s vote by the Board to seek a stay and pursue an appeal is disappointing, but not surprising.  From the beginning, the Board has chosen obstructionism and delay over cooperation – fighting to preserve power and control it was never granted under Arizona law.

Just two months ago, this same Board unanimously voted to return early voting and IT functions to the Recorder’s Office. Yet now, after a court has ordered them to do exactly that, they are choosing to ignore that order.

The law has always been clear. The Court reaffirmed that clarity after months of deliberation. Further appeals by the Board will only extend this conflict, waste more taxpayer money, and further erode voter confidence in the Board's ability to administer elections.

While the Board delays, the Recorder’s Office remains focused on delivering secure, accessible elections and stands ready to move forward in compliance with the Court’s ruling.

The voters of this County deserve elections run according to the law, not gamesmanship by a Board unwilling to follow it.
