Recorder Justin Heap Nominates Jeff Mason to Serve as Chief Deputy Recorder

PHOENIX – Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap has announced his nomination of Jeff Mason to serve as Chief Deputy Recorder. The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors is set to vote on this nomination in an upcoming meeting.

This nomination comes as Recorder Heap, who took office following his election victory in November 2024, moves to establish his senior leadership team. The Chief Deputy Recorder position has a crucial role, assisting the Recorder with the overall planning and management of the Recorder's Office operations and responsibilities.

The Chief Deputy Recorder serves as second in command, acting on behalf of the Recorder in his absence and representing the office in various settings. Key responsibilities include overseeing office activities, advising policies and practices, planning, and ensuring efficient operations.

A native to Arizona, Mr. Mason brings over 20 years of experience in Public Administration and Elections. He started his career as an MPA Intern for the Phoenix Mayors Office and has served in a variety of roles at city, state, county, and federal levels of government.

He previously served as the Business Systems Analyst for the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office where he conducted a detailed internal audit of the 2016 Presidential Preference Election and developed strategic recommendations for organizational improvements.

Mr. Mason earned his Master of Public Administration Degree from ASU, with his undergrad from Brigham Young University.

The Board of Supervisors' vote will determine whether Jeff Mason will assume this critical role in Maricopa County—the third largest voting jurisdiction in the country, serving more than 2.6 million active registered voters.
